Behind the experiment

I’m exploring sound, shape and perception through synaesthesia and cymatics. On the workbench: a plate, an exciter, and a new practice of photographing patterns made by vibration.

Build a wave and follow it through four views. Sound is optional: listen to the shared source wave at the displayed frequency while the carrier motion is slowed 1,000 times. The envelope follows the same visible rise and fall. Frequency, amplitude, circle sizes and envelope shape the same signal in every view. The plate shows how a surface responds to it.

About the plate response

The same sine components drive a fixed 30 cm plate. Their displacement energies combine through 64 calculated bending modes. Plate shape changes this receiving surface; it does not change the shared wave shown in the other views.

This approximate clamped aluminium plate is 0.8 mm thick. This is a steady-response estimate. Transient plate ring-down is not modelled. Grains illustrate movement towards quieter regions.

Every dot comes from the shared signal's recorded history. Height is its signed value; brighter blue shows stronger motion. Changing the source flows through the history instead of replacing it with an unrelated pattern.

The actual source history travels outward with a delay of distance ÷ 343 m/s, with the same slowdown as the circles. Height graphs pressure, not air moving up and down. Switching views reveals one section through that same field.

Each circle adds one sine component. The endpoint’s height is the shared signal. Circle sizes are direct sine amplitudes: halving one halves its contribution in every view. Odd harmonics build a square wave; odd and even harmonics build a sawtooth. These are finite, twelve-harmonic approximations. The amplitude sliders grow from zero. The ø buttons reverse a sine component by 180 degrees without changing its size.

The envelope scales all circle radii together. The carrier is slowed for viewing; envelope stage lengths control the visual note.

I teach music technology at the University of the West of Scotland, serve on the University Senate, and meet aspiring producers and engineers through schools and college outreach.

The aim is simple: help the next generation find the confidence, skills and curiosity to make something of their own.

I’m Chris. You’ll also find me as krystopfer. My work moves between composing, audio technology, machine learning and education. The thread through it all is a fascination with how things work and what we can make possible for each other.

Outside the studio, that curiosity takes me into filmmaking, FPV flying, 3D printing and making things by hand.

Earlier in my career, I co-founded Dronely, exploring how to land large drones on ships miles out at sea. Our industrial and maritime work helped inform the practical considerations behind the Civil Aviation Authority’s developing frameworks for beyond visual line of sight flight. These days, I enjoy the view.
